Keya Dasgupta, a retired social science researcher, had gone to a sprawling shopping arcade in south Kolkata when the scene at the adjacent dump yard met her eye. She took a couple of photos and showed them to her husband, Subhendu Dasgupta, a retired professor of South Asian Studies and artist, as soon as she came back home. Subhendu was struck by the stark reality of the photographs. They went together to the site immediately and snapped some more pictures. The final touches were added by Tilak Seth, a professional graphic artist.
