J’ai découvert la musique au cinéma…

Je n’ai pas découvert la musique au concert mais au cinéma à travers
le son feutré des haut-parleurs qui s’associe facilement aux images
absorbe les sens et approfondit certaines dimensions de l’histoire
dans une salle noire traversée d’un faisceau lumineux inconscient de
la musique qui opère quand on l’oublie on devient ce faisceau
lumineux le temps de la projection

I discovered music not in the concert hall but at the cinema through
the velvety sound from the speakers that easily associates with
images absorbs the senses and deepens dimensions of the story in a
dark room crossed by a beam of light unaware that the music operates
while forgotten you become the beam of light for the duration of the
show

This is the opening cue of Mary Ellen Davis’ feature documentary about Canadian photographer, Larry Towell, entitled Territories (Canada 2007, Peripheria Productions ; 65 min). Towell is the first Canadian photographer who became associated with the Magnum photo agency.

This cue, China, is from Karen Cho’s documentary Norman Bethune (Canada 2011, 23 min; PMA Productions, Extraordinary Canadians Series), which is based on Adrienne Clarkson’s biography of the activist communist doctor who worked and died in China during the Second Sino-Japanese War (Penguin Canada). The cue leads up to the meeting between the revolutionary surgeon and Mao Zedong.

This third cue, Jake, is part of the score for Lewis Cohen’s Mordecai Richler

(Canada 2011, 23 min; PMA Productions, Extraordinary Canadians Series), a documentary based on M.G. Vassanji’s biography of this Montreal novelist (Penguin Canada). The cue depicts the imaginary extravagaza of the main character of the novel St. Urbain’s Horseman.
