Bringing the margins to the centre

Montréal Serai is a non-profit webzine focused on arts, culture and politics. We began in 1986 as a local theatre and arts collective that went on to produce a print magazine before going digital. Our driving force: creating new communities, new arts, new solidarities, where voices once relegated to the margins take centre stage.

38 years and counting...

Montréal Serai aims to stretch beyond colonial mindsets with thoughtful essays, interviews with artists, elders and activists, reviews, commentaries, short stories, poems, artwork, videos, music, and much more. Neither strictly local nor focusing on current affairs, our magazine gives space to alternative perspectives that transcend and challenge mainstream concerns.Based in Montréal, known far longer as Tiohtiá:ke, our webzine is recognized as an inclusive and welcoming space in which both emerging and established artists and writers can engage.

‍Serai (from the Persian word, caravanserai) means a resting place for travelers. This land – Tiohtiá:ke – was never surrendered. It is live, unceded territory. We offer our respect and thanks to the many Indigenous nations that have honoured its waters and forests and skies for millennia. In particular, we thank its guardians, the Kanien’kéha: ka (Mohawk) people – and the Algonquin and Huron-Wendat peoples who share deep ties with this land. We are grateful for their ongoing leadership and teachings that have not been silenced, even in the face of genocide and 500 years of colonial plunder and devastation.
